The Scholarship Advantage

Herbert Presidential Scholars are introduced to many opportunities and rewards in and beyond the classroom that make their college experience unique. This includes:

A personalized Herbert Presidential Scholar medallion, bearing the iconic HPS seal and engraved with the scholar's name.
A one-time scholarship to assist with purchasing a laptop or other electronics related to the student’s field of study.
An additional $1,000 for study abroad or a professional development opportunity to use at any time during the student's full-time enrollment at Indiana University. Read about some of our scholars' study abroad experiences on our Instagram.
Close interaction with campus leadership, faculty, academic and career mentoring, and opportunities to meet with distinguished visitors to the university.

3 + 2 Option: Extend Your Scholarship

Scholars are permitted to use their award for a maximum of eight semesters at Indiana University. Students seeking to earn their bachelor's in three years and their master's in two years, commonly known as the 3 + 2 program, may be eligible to renew their scholarship for the first year of their master's coursework. To learn more about conditions and eligibility for the 3 + 2 option, scholars are advised to contact the Herbert Presidential Scholars university-wide office at hscholar@iu.edu.

Scholarship Maintenance and Renewal

Herbert Scholars must maintain the GPA or higher that is required from the other matching scholarship.
Scholars need to remain in "Full time student" standing, minimum 12 credits per semester.
The scholarships are interdependent. If a student loses one scholarship, they lose the matching one as well.
Community service is not required for the Herbert scholarship but might be required for your matching scholarship.
The Herbert scholarship is awarded only during the fall and spring semester.
Attending HPS events is highly encouraged. All Scholars are urged to take advantage of the information and networking opportunities presented during these events, as they have greatly benefited past scholars.

Frequently Asked Questions

IU offers millions of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year across its seven campuses. For example, in addition to the Herbert Presidential Scholars, other merit scholarship programs at IU include the Wells Scholars Program and Kelley Scholars Program on the Bloomington campus and the Bepko Scholars Program on the IU Indianapolis campus.

This award is designated specifically for Indiana residents. Indiana University offers other scholarships that may be available to out-of-state residents. For more information, see www.indiana.edu, select the campus you're interested in attending, and view the section on financial aid and scholarships.

Indiana's top graduating high school seniors who have applied for admission to an Indiana University campus may be nominated by that campus for consideration. Students who are interested in being considered for the Herbert Presidential Scholar Award are encouraged to apply for admission to IU in the fall (by November 1 for full scholarship and financial aid consideration) of their senior year of high school.

Notifications of receipt of the award go out in May.

Except in rare instances, scholarships are not transferable. The Herbert Presidential Scholarship is specific to the campus to which a student has originally applied and been offered admission. Awards will be extended by the campus provost or chancellor sponsoring the award. Transfer requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
